Privacy Policy
Last updated: 11 October 2026
synthtap is a free browser game. It has no accounts, no cookies, no tracking and no ads. This policy explains the little data it does handle.
Who is responsible
The data controller is Juha Väisänen. Contact: [email protected].
What we process and why
| Data | Why | Legal basis (GDPR) | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leaderboard entry: the name you type, your score, highest multiplier, run length and the time you submitted it | To show your score on the public leaderboard, which you asked for by submitting it | Providing the service you requested (Art. 6(1)(b)) | Until you ask us to delete it, or the leaderboard is reset or shut down |
| Your IP address, when your browser talks to the game server | To limit how often scores can be submitted and the leaderboard loaded, against spam and abuse | Our legitimate interest in keeping the service working (Art. 6(1)(f)) | Held only in the server's memory, for about a minute. Never saved to the database |
| Technical request data (IP address, browser type, time, page requested) | Our hosting providers need it to deliver the site and protect it from attacks | Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) | Short-lived provider logs, under the providers' own retention rules |
Leaderboard names are public. Anyone can see them. Please use a nickname, not your real name or anything else that identifies you.
When a run ends, the game asks the server to add one to that day's run counter. Only the number is stored, nothing about you.
Our own server logs record the request, response status and timing, not your IP address.
Visit statistics
To see how many people visit and where they come from, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies, no local storage and no fingerprinting, and doesn't track you across sites. We only see totals, such as page views per day, referring sites, countries and device types, never individual visitors. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing how the game is used (Art. 6(1)(f)).
Stored on your device
The game keeps a few settings in your browser's local storage: your best score, the last name you entered, whether music is on, and your audio sync calibration. They stay on your device and are not sent to us, except the name when you submit a score. They are needed for features you use, so no consent banner is required. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.
Sharing your run
The share button hands a short summary to your device's share sheet or copies it to your clipboard. We don't see where you share it. The app you share to handles it under its own privacy policy.
Supporting the game
The "Support" and "Buy me a coffee" links open Buy Me a Coffee in a new tab. Nothing from it loads on our pages. If you tip, Buy Me a Coffee handles the payment under its own privacy policy, and we only see what it shows creators about supporters.
Service providers
These companies process data for us, under data processing terms:
- Cloudflare: hosts and delivers the website, and sits in front of the game server to protect it from attacks.
- Fly.io: runs the game server, in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Neon: hosts the leaderboard database, in Frankfurt, Germany.
Some of them are US companies and may handle data outside the EU/EEA. Such transfers are covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. We don't sell your data or share it with anyone else.
The game's fonts are served from our own site, not from Google or another third party.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, to restrict or object to its processing, and to get a copy of it. Email [email protected]. As there are no accounts, tell us the name, the score and roughly when you submitted it, so we can find the entry. We reply within one month.
You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live or work. In Finland that is the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman.
Children
If you are under 16, ask a parent or guardian before submitting a score, and never use your real name on the leaderboard.
Changes
If this policy changes, we update it here and change the date at the top. See also the Terms of Use.
